How secure do you feel in your own home? I remember a
time when people knew everyone on their street and doors were left unlocked. It
was a time when people respected one another and would not cross the line of
intrusion into someone else’s space without being invited in. People were more
trusting and closer knit.
But
times have changed. Over the years many stories have come to light involving the
invasion of privacy and the exploitation of many individuals. Two sectors are
our senior and single female
population. Many people are choosing to live in their own home or apartment
alone. A great marketing opportunity to sell products or services directly to
this consumer exists. The majority of business people are honest and sincere in
offering their services but beware. There are dishonest individuals who pray on
the vulnerability of persons living alone or in need of assistance. Making an
easy dollar is their primary goal as they ruthlessly weave innocent, trusting
individuals into their web of deceit.
Here
are some simple precautions one can take:
To
start, always lock your door. Before
you open it ask who is on the other side. A good device is the peak hole – use
it to see who is there. A chain lock coupled with your dead bolt is an extra
precautionary device many use. Once you have established who it is you are going
to let in listen carefully to what is said. You may even want a third party
(friend, relative) to be in attendance.
Door
to Door Salespersons selling products/services (particularly from out of town)
-
Ask
for credentials, professional affiliations (associations i.e. chamber of
commerce, member of professional organization) and references. Do your
homework and check out the information before you enter into an agreement.
Make sure all quotations showing the specific details of work to be done,
product to be purchased or services to be rendered are in writing. Never
sign a contract until you have completely investigated the company. Keep
your copy of the contract in a safe, accessible place. Make sure the
vendor’s copy is the same as yours. Any changes to the contract make sure
you and the salesperson initial it.
Deposit up front is not required for work to be done later. Pay only once
the job is completed to your satisfaction. Ask a relative or friend to look
at the completed job. Do not flash cash around or indicate where you have
it.
-
Be
on the alert for telephone and door to door solicitations for charity. Often
they will ask personal financial questions…. At this point do not give
them any information. Find out
as much information about their company and subject. This should include
address, telephone number, contact name in the organization, length of time
in business, identification papers, description of their vehicle accompanied
by license number etc. Ask them to come back at an appointed date and time.
This will give you an opportunity to check with your local police or the
agency they represent. You want to know if they are legitimate.

IN
HOME MONITORING SYSTEM
It is a good idea to secure a monitoring system to protect your home when you are
away (vacationing, or out doing errands). There are inexpensive systems, which you
can obtain. Some of the benefits include reduced rates on home insurance and
peace of mind knowing that you and your property are protected. This will offset the
initial cost of obtaining the security system.
Allan Keeler a security specialist of AlarmForce
North West, strongly recommends a two-way voice unit. Should the alarm be
activated, this direct communication with the client enables the monitoring
station operator to determine what is occurring in the home at that precise
moment. The operator can then take the appropriate action quickly and
efficiently. Having someone available to assist you twenty-four hours per
day and seven days a week will certainly add to your sense well being. Once
again, deal with a reputable security company, get a written quotation for
all services, installation, taxes and equipment provided.
There are special safety /medical alarm systems for seniors whether it is
for a medical condition or for any other emergency situation which could
occur i.e. a fall, fire, a call for help from family, neighbour or police
etc. This handy tool can be worn on a chain around the neck, wrist or placed
on or near your bed. It is totally portable. The distressed senior is able
to summon help simply by activating a panic button. Operators are
immediately available to initiate whatever type of assistance is required.
They can talk directly to that person, giving them comfort and reassurance
till help arrives.

Other
precautions you can take include leaving a light on inside and outside the
entrance of your home. Should you return at night, a little light will make
it easier for you to find your key. Once you enter your home this light will
give you a sense of warmth and security. If you are given a ride home at
night, have the person who accompanied you wait till you get inside. It will
only take a moment. Once inside make sure you lock your doors and windows.
It is your responsibility to secure your property and
well being. These are a few simple guidelines to follow when home alone. Use
common sense; if you have a gut feeling something is wrong do not open your
door. Call for assistance. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
